What can life teach us that school cannot?
Life can teach us a couple of things that school cannot. First thing's first. School teaches us school lessons, unlike life, which teaches us life lessons. Life can teach us how to be independent. Most of the time in school, we have friends that we always hang out with. But people cannot always be there for us, and therefore sometimes, we need to known how to live on our own. The greasers from The Outsiders knew how to be independent because of the lack of friends and surviving on their own. Independence includes self defence as well. Johnny, for example, killed Bob to protect Johnny and himself. Although it was an inhumane thing to do, he was still defending himself. However, violence is not always the answer. Ponyboy learns that fighting does not really help overcome problems, but instead, could make it worse. Life can also teach us that having fun is actually really important. Although school just give quizzes, tests, exams, and homework, life can teach us that fun is what humans all need. Life can teach us that some people might seem like a different person on the outside than the inside as well. People can have a personal story of why they are acting in a certain way. For instance, Ponyboy learns that Darry really loved Johnny and him, but were just over protective of them, and so did not appear to be the nicest at all times. It also teaches us how to deal with problems. Textbooks can say what to do and what to not do, but the more important part is to actually do it, by experience. What a school can teach us is limited, but what life can teach us is infinite.
